Warri Traders Given Ultimatum to Clear Roadside Waste: Delta State Taskforce Takes Action

In a bid to address the alarming issue of indiscriminate waste disposal and obstructive trading practices, the Delta State Taskforce on Environment, led by Chairman Chief Godspower Omafuvwe Asiuwhu JP, has issued a stern ultimatum to traders at Okere Market in Okumagba, Warri South Local Government Area, to comply to environmental regulatory laws in their operations.

Expressing deep concern over the unsightly and unsanitary conditions prevailing in the market area, the taskforce, in collaboration with the Warri-South Local Government Council, served a 24-hour notice to traders to promptly remove waste dumped on road medians and clear obstructions from walkways and road sides.

The crackdown comes in response to reports of traders engaging in hazardous practices, including setting up stalls ontop drainage systems, encroaching onto pedestrian walkways, and littering road medians with refuse, thereby impeding the flow of traffic and endangering public safety.

Chief Asiuwhu emphasized the need for traders to adhere to environmental regulations and uphold cleanliness standards to safeguard public health and preserve the integrity of the local environment. He underscored the importance of maintaining order and cleanliness within market premises to enhance the overall appeal and functionality of the area.

During the enforcement operation, the taskforce mobilized resources to ensure compliance with directives, compelling traders to relocate their merchandise away from roadways, clear waste from road medians, and restore order to the market vicinity. Additionally, health officers led by Sanitarian Stella Mode provided assistance and urged traders to utilize waste disposal services provided by the council to prevent further environmental degradation.

Despite efforts to mitigate the issue, challenges persist as some traders continue to flout regulations by dumping waste on road medians, prompting authorities to intensify enforcement measures and explore long-term solutions to address the root causes of the problem.

The joint initiative between the Delta State Taskforce on Environment and Warri-South Local Government Council underscores the commitment of local authorities to promote sustainable environmental practices and foster a cleaner, healthier community for residents and visitors alike.
