The Executive Chairman, Delta State Internal Revenue Service Sir Monday John Onyeme has lauded the Delta State Governor Sen. Dr Ifeanyi Okowa for his exemplary leadership prowess and his political will which he said has added a boost to the revenue drive for an Improved Internally generated revenue of the state.
Speaking Yesterday on Tax Thursday , Onyeme noted that the Service under his leadership has recorded tremendous successes in not only expanding the tax bracket but has also boosted the Internally generated revenue of the state adding that though there are still much more to be done.
According to him, actualizing the Stronger Delta Agenda of the Okowa’s led administration is the major priority of the Service adding that Gov Okowa has made good usage of the taxpayers money via Provision of basic amenities, Infrastructural development , Youth Empowerment and many more for Deltans.
While revealing that the service under his leadership did not only surpassed the 2021 revenue target but has also recorded the highest revenue since the establishment of the board, he expressed confidence that the year 2022 will not be an exception in terms of excellent performance in IGR generation.
“As a service, we are not resting on our oars, we are exploring other areas that are largely untapped such as online betting, stamp duties, capital gains tax etc through engagement with expertise in those areas. The Service has taken some measures by intensifying data mining and gathering, as well as profiling of newly identified tax agents for the purpose of bringing them into the tax net to improve revenue generation from the informal sector”
He said the 2020 Revenue Service Law gave the Service the sole responsibility to collect all taxes, levies and any other forms of revenues within the state, hence , the service will take actions on the directives by the State Government stating that all heads of revenue generating Ministries, Departments and Agencies within the state should review all existing revenue collection arrangements with consultants in line with the provisions of the Delta State Internal Revenue Service Law 2020 for an Improved IGR from MDAs.
He called on Deltans most especially taxable Persons to embrace taxation in totality noting that the more taxes we pay, the more government provides basic amenities for all of us, since government owes it as a duty to provide for the welfare and security of its citizens. We also owe government the duty to pay our taxes promptly.” We will not treat non-compliance with kid gloves because its a huge sign of irresponsibility for a citizen to evade paying his or her taxes which is also a serious offence punishable by law” he added.
