NEWMAP/Delta Govt Boosting Socio-Economic Dev. Through Road Network – Asiuwhu

The Delta State Government was determined to link every community in the state with good network of roads within the life of the Governor Ifeanyi Okowa’s administration.

The new State Commissioner for Environment, Chief Godspower Asiuwhu, stated this when he paid on the spot visit to inspect the three completed civil works gully erosion sites at Obomkpa, Ukwu-Nzu and Owanta communities, sponsored by the partnership project of the Delta State Government and the World Bank.

The Commissioner, who was accompanied by the Acting Project Coordinator of Delta State NEWMAP, Mr. Benedict Nwaokocha, said the completed network of roads linking various communities in the state have no doubt boosted infrastructural and soco-economic lives of the people living within the intervention communities.

Chief Asiuwhu said the effort of the state government towards interfacing with international donors for the development of the state was yielding positive results through infrastructural, socio-economic and basic livelihood empowerment of the people in the intervention communities to raise their standard of living.

The Commissioner, who inspected the aforementioned projects as part of his first official assignment, preparatory for commissioning by the state government, assured the other two communities in Jesse and Ubulu-Uku, that the state government has provided another window of opportunities through European Investment Bank to provide intervention funding for the commencement of the gully erosion and flood sites in their respective domains.

While appreciating Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, for providing the enabling environment for the Project to thrive in the state, Chief Asuiwhu commended the former Commissioners in the Ministry of Environment, Chief (Barr.) John Nani and Chief Chris. Onogba, for providing effective supervisory roles, saying he was happy to be a part of the success stories of the NEWMAP project in the state.

The Acting Project Coordinator of Delta Srate NEWMAP, Mr. Benedict Nwaokocha, said apart from the completed civil work projects delivered for the host communities, the donor Agency also built the capacity of the people on areas of mechanized farming, provided potable borehole water, solar powered light in health care centres, provision of ICT and skill acquisition empowerment and provision of tricycles for evacuation of refuse during environmental sanitation in respective communities in Obomkpa, Ukwu-Nzu in Aniocha North, Owanta in Ika North East and Jesse in Ethiope West Local Govetnment Areas.

Stakeholders who received the Commissioner in the communities visited including Chief Ralph Obianke, Owanta; Mr. Emmanuel Odogbo, Ukwu-Nzu and Papa Fidelis Monye of Obomkpa, thanked Governor Ifeanyi Okowa for the facelift of the respective communities.

They, however, assured to protect the various government infrastructures in their communities, as well as promoting environmental sanitation through the use of the tricycle provided by the partnership project for the communities.

The Environment Commissioner, had earlier paid a familiarization visit to the Office of Delta State NEWMAP, Asaba, where he had interface with the staff of the Project.
