Udu Council Chairman Oyibode Urges Clergy to Curb Indecent Dressing and Moral Decline in Churches

The Udu Chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), led by its Coordinator, Reverend Manuel Ikayaa, alongside some of its executive members, yesterday Tuesday, May 26, 2026, paid a courtesy visit to the Executive Chairman of Udu Local Government Council, Olorogun Hon. Vincent Ogheneruemu Oyibode JP FCIA, at his office in Otor-Udu.

During the visit, the Council Chairman, Oyibode, welcomed the delegation and used the opportunity to urge church leaders to take stronger action in promoting modest dressing and moral discipline among youths in their congregations. He expressed concern over what he described as indecent dressing among some young men and women in churches, saying it is inconsistent with Christian values and proper church conduct.

Oyibode further advised that religious leaders should intensify teachings against social vices, including the “get-rich-quick” mentality among young people. He emphasized that churches can play a key role in promoting unity and moral renewal in society through regular sermons, crusades, and organized spiritual programmes.

He also encouraged CAN to serve as a bridge of unity among citizens rather than a platform that excludes or discourages participation, adding that consistent engagement with congregations could help correct societal ills.

The Council Chairman, while hosting the delegation, also took them on a tour of ongoing projects within the council, including his office complex, the chapel project, and the police divisional headquarters.

Oyibode further advised the clerics to discourage the dedication of cars and houses linked to suspected internet fraudsters (“Yahoo boys”), noting that some of the beneficiaries of such activities are allegedly involved in armed robbery and kidnapping. He stressed that the church must not encourage or normalize wealth acquired through criminal means.

He also called on church leaders to intensify preaching against drug abuse, including the misuse of nicotine and other harmful substances, warning that such practices have contributed to severe behavioural and mental health challenges among some young people.

The visiting clerics commended the Chairman for the chapel project, describing it as a significant addition to the council’s infrastructure. According to them, the chapel will serve as a centre for worship, prayer, counselling, and spiritual support for staff and residents of Udu. They noted that such a facility would promote moral discipline, enhance staff welfare, and strengthen unity among workers and the wider community.

Members of the CAN delegation included Reverend John Djebah, Venerable Christopher Erhuurhu, Very Reverend Michael Asuquo, Mrs. Vaikosen Patience, Pastor Victoria Oshare, and Pastor John Djugo.
