UPU Inaugurates sub-committees for 90thanniversary

Ahead of the 90thanniversary of the Urhobo Progress Union scheduled to hold in December 2021, 9 sub-committees have been inaugurated to drive various functions before and during the celebration.

Inaugurating the sub-committees, Chairman of the Central Planning Committee, Prof Sam Oyovbaire led the gathering to observe a minute silence in honor of the Late General Dominic Oneya of Agbarho, charging the committee members to keep the unity of Urhobo in view in all their undertakings, while also stressing that all the various sections of Urhobo are better together as one nation.

Prof Oyovbaire acknowledges that though Urhobo may have distinct peculiarities in terms of dialectical differences in language expressions, the 24 Urhobo groupings or kingdoms constitute the Urhobo nation whose demographic value constitute a huge asset amongst the comity of nations.

He urged the committee Chairmen and members to be diligent in the discharge of their duties and that the 90 years of existence of UPU deserves all the celebrations which would go with public lectures and a huge opportunity to showcase the rich cultural heritage of the Urhobo people.

The 9 sub-committees inaugurated at the brief ceremony which took place at Uvwiamuge-Agbarho include Finance with Chief John Oguma as Chairman and Chief Ede Dafinone as Co-Chairman; Contact and Mobilization with Dr Ebenezer Okorodudu as Chairman; Media and Publicity with Mr Abraham Ogbodo as Chairman; Protocol with Chief Moses Odibo as Chairman; Works, Venue and Culture with Chief Francis Ifie as Chairman; Welfare with Chief Mrs Beatrice Olori as Chairperson; Security with Comrade Ovie Ebireri as Chairman, Religious Matters with Rev Fr Oghenejode Abaka as Chairman and Technology Committee with Dr Benson Uwheru as Chairman.

Responding on behalf of Chairmen and members of the sub-committee, Chief Moses Odibo thanked the Central Committee, particularly the Urhobo Progress Union for the confidence in saddling them with the special responsibilities ahead of the UPU celebration, promising to deliver on the mandate ahead.

Earlier in a brief remark, First Deputy President General of UPU, Chief Anthony Onoharhigho who represented the UPU President General, expressed delight with the opportunity to be part of history as the 90thanniversary signposts urging committee members to put in their best so as to do Urhobo proud at the end of the day.

The Central Planning Committee for the UPU 90thAnniversary comprises Prof Sam Oyovbaire as Chairman, Prof Sunny Awhefeada as Secretary while Chief Anthony Onoharhigho, Chief Francis Ifie, Chief Mrs Christy Siakpere and others as members.
