PROF. KINGSLEY AKABA RAISES CONCERN OVER INCREASING DRUG ABUSE AMONG YOUTHS………On the Occasion of the World Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking
The Chief Medical Director of the Federal Medical Centre, Ovwian, Prof. Kingsley Akaba, has expressed concern over the growing rate of drug abuse among young people, describing it as a serious threat to public health and society.
Prof. Akaba made this known today Friday, 26 June 2026, in commemoration of the International World Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.
He noted that the abuse of hard drugs, prescription medicines, and other harmful substances is leading to addiction, mental health problems, organ damage, violence, and avoidable deaths among youths. He explained that peer pressure, depression, curiosity, and negative influences are some of the factors pushing young people into substance abuse.
According to him, drug abuse destroys the future of many youths, affects their productivity, and places a heavy burden on families and communities. He also warned that many of the substances being abused contain dangerous chemicals that can cause serious and permanent health problems.
The CMD called on parents, schools, religious organisations, community leaders, and government agencies to intensify awareness campaigns and preventive efforts against drug abuse. He stressed the need for proper parental guidance, open communication, and emotional support to help young people make the right choices.
Prof. Akaba reaffirmed the commitment of FMC Ovwian to providing counselling, rehabilitation support, and medical care for people affected by substance abuse. He added that seeking help early greatly improves the chances of recovery.
He also encouraged youths to focus on education, skill acquisition, entrepreneurship, and other productive activities instead of engaging in drug abuse.
“The future of our nation depends on our youths. We must work together to protect them from the dangers of drugs and help them become responsible leaders of tomorrow,” he said.
