Environment: Delta Govt. Committed To Re-engineering Policies, Renewable Efficiency – Jamani

The Honorable Commissioner for Environment, Delta State, Mr. Jamani Tommy Ejiro has reiterated that inline with the mission statement of re-engineering programmes, policies and strategies on climate change to protect natural resources, build renewable energy and advance energy efficiency in Delta State, the state government is committed in ensuring that Delta environment gets the needed attention inline with the M.O.R.E Agenda of this administration.
The Commissioner disclosed this to newsmen in Asaba through his Special Assistant, Mr. Victor Abugo on the need while Deltans should key into this administration agenda of constructing a habitable environment for the benefit of the people.
Jamani Ejiro said that on assumption of office as the Honorable Commissioner for Environment and inline with the state government’s vision of advancing Delta State through the M.O.R.E Agenda of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, government has taken it upon itself to make the environment more habitable and productive for the use by the good people of the state; adding that, at individual or societal level, if the environment is not well handled, it could result in disasters to man and threaten his very existence.
He however noted that government is creating a unique relationship and nexus between the environment and other areas in this regard as this will usher in policies that will enhance effective and efficient service delivery by the Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s administration.
The Environment Commissioner, Jamani Ejiro while giving a brief background of the ministry, asserted that the consuming passion of the government was its determined efforts to create a better, safe, clean and sustainable environment in the state; adding that to achieve these lofty goals, he explains the ministry focus of enforcing the state environmental policies with a view of addressing environmental and ecological issues with a more result oriented mindset via an appreciable approach that will be beneficial to the system.
He stated that sanitation and waste management, erosion ,deforestation, flood control, pollution, climate change mitigation and adaptation, wildlife, conservation and management, amongst others are some of the ministry focus and government is determined for its full implementation.
According to Jamani, the Ministry of Environment has various parastatals that are in the process of driving the strategic goals of clean and sustainable environment. Delta State Environmental Protection Agency (DELSEPA), Delta State Waste Management Board, (DSWMB) and Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project (NEWMAP
On forest management, the Commissioner noted that since maintaining the forest is critical to sustaining the environment, the ministry will also mapped out plans for more activities such as; Tree Planting, Economic Tree Fruits Seedling.system as well as regeneration of forest reserves.
The Honorable Commissioner observed that the Ministry is still faced with the challenges of poor attitude of the people towards environmental issues. He maintained that lack of co-operation from the people in respect to proper disposal of waste, monitoring and enforcement of environmental sanitation laws violated by offenders across the state amongst others has done more harm than good in this regard.
He however urged the good people of Delta State to support government effort and policies of creating enabling environment for its citizens.
