DTSG Shuts Down Over 20 Dredging Sites in Ughelli North LGA Amid Environmental Concerns”
Today, Thursday, February 29th, 2024, Chief Godspower Omafuvwe Asiuwhu JP, Chairman of the State Taskforce on Environment, headed a specialized team to conduct an inspection of sand dredging sites in Ughelli North LGA.
The primary objective of the inspection was to ensure strict adherence to relevant regulatory laws governing their operations.
During the on-the-spot assessment, it was revealed that 20 dredging operations were violating environmental laws. Consequently, a stop order was issued, resulting in the closure of these sites.
Accompanying the operational team were Mr. Augustine Oritsemeyiwa, representatives from the Federal Ministry of Environment, Mr. Kennedy Waide, representatives of the Honourable Commissioner for Environment, executives of the Sand Dredgers Union, and members of the Nigerian Police Force.”
