By Philip Onome
The leadership of Otor-Ogor Kingdom in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State has taken a decisive stand against the sale of illicit drugs within the community, charging security agents to go after dealers
The President General of the community, Hon. Comr. UK-Tobi Emma Edirin, gave this warning and ban on the sales of hard drugs at the community town hall during an enlarge meeting attended by security agents and community leaders.
Edirin emphasized the community’s zero tolerance for drug-related activities, stating, “We have resolved at the community level that there should be no more sales of hard drugs. If you are caught, whether man, woman, or youth, the law enforcement agency will apprehend you, regardless of your status.”
He urged the police and other law enforcement agencies to act without interference from the community, stressing the severity of the drug problem in Ogor and its link to rising crime rates.
He described the dire consequences of drug abuse, noting how it has led many youths to engage in theft and violent crimes to fund their habits. “The drug dealers have turned Ogor Community into a den of hard drug sales,” Edirin lamented, citing instances of theft and robbery, particularly involving stolen tricycles and machines (bikes) used to finance drug purchases.
Edirin pointed out that many local chemists and shops are complicit in the sale of these drugs, which has exacerbated the problems facing the community. He expressed his determination to combat this issue, stating, “I will not, in my tenure, allow my future generation to perish because of hard drugs.”
In collaboration with local security agencies, including the Area Command and Divisional Police Office, the President General called for a joint effort to restore safety and order in the community. He acknowledged facing threats for his stance against drug sales but remains resolute in his mission to cleanse the community.
Addressing another critical issue, the President General announced a stringent penalty for land grabbing, stating that anyone found reselling land previously sold to another person would incur a fine of N500,000. He urged community members, including those in the diaspora, to adhere to the resolutions made during the town hall meeting.
CSP Augustine Duru, the DPO of A’ Division Ughelli, echoed Edirin’s sentiments, reminding the community about the importance of steering clear of crime, which ultimately does not pay.
“We are here this morning to future enlightening our people to stay away for crime because it does not pay. He also urge the security committee and Ogor leadership to immediately over suspected culprits to the police, if any one is caught.”
“The youths are the leaders of tomorrow but some of these youths indulge in so many things that will jeopardize their future in life. There is no gain in the intake of hard drugs. So I encourage all of you to stay out of drugs and shun other social vices like cultism which some of you are engaged into.
He encouraged the community youths to stay clear for crime and in take of hard drugs; and have a rethink in their nephros act and see how they can be more useful the themselves. He urged them to engage something positive instead of stealing to survive.
The meeting, which also saw the attendance of ACP Aliyu Adebayo’s representative, SP Greg Ehikhamenor, highlighted the community’s commitment to addressing these pressing issues with the support of law enforcement.
