Delta Taskforce Cracks Down on Illegal Structures and Roadside Trading for Safer, Cleaner Highways

In a recent interview on DBS Thursday Morning Ride, the Chairman of the Delta State Taskforce on Environment, Chief Godspower Asiuwhu, highlighted the government’s zero tolerance for illegal structures and unauthorized roadside trading along highways. Speaking on the program aired on November 7, 2024, Chief Asiuwhu discussed the hazards these activities pose to both the environment and public safety, stressing that Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s administration is fully committed to addressing these issues.

Chief Asiuwhu emphasized that Delta State, as a multi-city state with comprehensive urban planning, cannot tolerate structures and trading activities that deface its cities. He noted that these illegal setups lack necessary approvals, are often substandard, and contribute to environmental hazards. From blocking roadways and causing traffic disruptions to raising fire risks, these structures present serious dangers. According to Asiuwhu, allowing such unplanned developments not only undermines the state’s master plan but also detracts from its aesthetic and developmental goals.

Addressing concerns about enforcement, Chief Asiuwhu clarified that the task force has taken a responsible approach. He explained that prior notices were issued to occupants of illegal structures, along with sensitization meetings to ensure they understood the government’s intentions. He stated, “Only an unfocused administration would destroy or displace individuals without due notice. We ensured all necessary steps were taken before we embarked on this removal exercise.”

Chief Asiuwhu also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to a clean and orderly Delta State, assuring the public that the task force will continue to enforce regulations to protect both the environment and public welfare.
