Ethiope East Council Chairman Addresses Abraka Protest Incident, Assures Citizens of Security Measures

ABRAKA, DELTA STATE — The Executive Chairman of Ethiope East Local Government Area, Hon. Chief Augustine Ogedegbe, JP, has reacted to the unfortunate incident that occurred during an anti-kidnapping protest held yesterday in Abraka, a university town in Delta State.

The peaceful protest, organized by members of the student community, human rights activists, and concerned residents, turned chaotic following an altercation between some demonstrators and security personnel. The clash reportedly led to injuries, sparking widespread concern across the LGA.

In a press statement issued today, Chief Ogedegbe called for calm and reassured the public that the local government is taking decisive action to ensure the safety and well-being of all residents.

“First and foremost, I urge all residents to remain calm and law-abiding during this challenging period,” the statement read. “The security and well-being of every citizen is the paramount concern of this administration.”

Chief Ogedegbe disclosed that the local government is already working closely with relevant security agencies to enhance surveillance and restore peace across the area. He expressed empathy with the victims of the clash and wished them a speedy recovery.

“We are committed to restoring calm and ensuring a safe, secure environment for our people. While we respect the right of citizens to peaceful assembly and expression, we must all eschew violence and any action that may undermine public peace,” he added.

The Chairman emphasized the importance of constructive dialogue and disclosed that his office is actively engaging with student leaders, community representatives, and security agencies to resolve tensions and prevent any further escalation.

In light of the protest’s original purpose — to raise awareness and demand action against increasing cases of kidnapping — Chief Ogedegbe reaffirmed the council’s commitment to combating criminality in all forms.

“We will continue to prioritize proactive measures to combat criminality, including kidnappings, and will spare no effort in safeguarding lives and property,” he said.

The statement concluded with a call for cooperation and patience from all stakeholders while the government works toward a lasting resolution.
