UPU Worldwide Felicitates With Christians at Christmas, Calls for Peace, Youth Empowerment and Sustained Development.
The Urhobo Progress Union (UPU) Worldwide has joined Christians across Nigeria and beyond in celebrating Christmas, describing the season as a period that renews hope and emphasizes the virtues of love, peace, sacrifice, unity and service to humanity.
In a Christmas message signed by Comrade Dr. Prince Kehinde Oghenevwairhe Taiga, National Publicity Secretary of UPU Worldwide, and issued on behalf of the President General, Olorogun Barr. Ese Gam Owe, the union urged Nigerians to use the season for sober reflection and the strengthening of national values that promote unity and communal progress.
According to the statement, Christmas offers an opportunity for individuals, communities and leaders to recommit themselves to building a society anchored on peace, understanding and social responsibility — virtues the UPU says are essential for national development.
While felicitating with Urhobo sons and daughters, the apex sociocultural body expressed worry over the increasing security challenges in parts of the country, noting that crime, violence and social disorder continue to threaten peaceful coexistence and economic advancement.
The UPU therefore called for stronger collaboration between government, security agencies, traditional rulers, community leaders, parents and youths to deepen peace initiatives, strengthen community policing and safeguard lives and property.
The Union commended the Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. (Elder) Sheriff Francis Oborevwori, for what it described as sustained strides in infrastructural development, peace-building and youth-oriented programmes across the state. It highlighted ongoing investments in education, health, road projects, entrepreneurship and empowerment as initiatives that have contributed to stability and growth.
The statement also appealed to well-placed Urhobo sons and daughters, particularly captains of industry and business leaders, to intensify support for youth empowerment through investments in skills development, mentorship, agriculture, technology, and small-scale enterprises to tackle unemployment and curb social vices.
Similarly, the UPU admonished Urhobo youths to shun crime, violence and substance abuse, emphasizing that such actions derail destiny and hinder progress. Instead, the union encouraged them to embrace education, skills acquisition, discipline, innovation and hard work as pathways to success.
“As we celebrate the birth of Christ, may the timeless message of Christmas renew hope, strengthen unity and inspire collective commitment toward a more peaceful and prosperous society,” the statement added.
The UPU extended warm Christmas greetings to all Urhobo sons and daughters and wished Nigerians a peaceful and prosperous New Year.
