The people of Abraka, Ethiope East Local Government Area of Delta State, were thrown into mourning earlier yesterday following the tragic loss of a young lady, allegedly struck by a stray bullet from an officer attached to the Operation Delta Sweep security outfit.

Reacting to the heartbreaking incident, the Executive Chairman of Ethiope East Local Government Council, Hon. Chief Augustine Ogedegbe JP, expressed deep sadness over the development, describing it as a painful and avoidable loss. The Chairman made this known in a post on his verified Facebook page.

While acknowledging the challenging responsibilities security personnel face in maintaining law and order, Ogedegbe lamented that such incidents deviate from their core mandate of protecting lives and property.

“It is deeply concerning to see incidents like this, which diverge from the intended duties of combating crime and ensuring public safety. We will pursue this issue with the seriousness it deserves and ensure that justice is served while taking the necessary steps to prevent such occurrences in the future,” he assured.

The Council Chairman further appealed to the people of Abraka to remain calm and law-abiding as authorities engage relevant security agencies to ensure accountability and forestall a repeat of the tragedy.

In his message of condolence, Hon. Ogedegbe extended heartfelt sympathy to the family of the deceased, praying for strength and comfort during this difficult period.

The incident has sparked widespread concern across the local government, with calls for more caution and professionalism in the handling of firearms by security operatives.
