Oyibode Congratulates Udu Son Iyede On Historic Student Union Victory In UK
The Executive Chairman of Udu Local Government Council, Olorogun(Hon.),
Vincent Ogheneruemu Oyibode,JP FCIA, has congratulated a Nigerian student from Udu in Delta State, Richard Ogheneruemurode Remz Iyede Jr., on his election as Student Union President at Brunel University London, United Kingdom.
Iyede, a Mechanical Engineering student from Aladja community, polled 702 votes in a keenly contested election to emerge as Welfare and Inclusion President one of the institution’s top student leadership positions. He is the son of Olorogun Richard Iyede, a respected traditional chief and industrialist from Udu Kingdom.
In a congratulatory message released through his Media Unit, the Udu Council boss, Oyibode described Iyede as a true ambassador of Udu Kingdom and Nigeria at large, expressing confidence that he would record a successful tenure in office.
Oyibode, who was himself a student unionist during his days at Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma advised the newly elected President to adopt what he called the “three Cs of unionism”
consultation, consolidation and constructive confrontation as guiding principles of his administration. He also urged him to prioritise students’ welfare, stressing that unionism is fundamentally about welfarism.
Before his election, Iyede built an impressive record in student leadership. He previously served as President of the African Caribbean Society, where he introduced career development initiatives, including CV workshops, participation in Black Business Week, STEM career fairs, and mental-health awareness programmes.
In 2024, he was elected Chairman of the Student Assembly where he led student engagement on staff redundancy concerns, organised a peaceful protest that facilitated dialogue with university management, and championed the introduction of a Start-Up Development Module to promote innovation among students.
Iyede also represented the university at the UK Parliament as part of a delegation of the National Union of Students where he lobbied on key student issues including accommodation costs, grants
and the broader cost-of-living challenges facing students in the United Kingdom.
