NYCN Tasks New Delta CP On Crime, Cultism, Herdsmen Attacks

The Delta State Council of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has charged the newly deployed Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Aina Adesola, to intensify the fight against crime, cultism, illicit drug activities and rising incidents of violent attacks linked to armed herdsmen across Delta State.

In a statement issued and signed in Asababy the State Chairman of the council, Comrade Odiri Milton Sagboje, CLN, congratulated CP Aina on his posting, describing the deployment as timely and strategic in view of the prevailing security challenges in the country.

The council expressed confidence in the new police chief’s wealth of experience and professionalism, noting that Delta State’s youthful population, while being its greatest asset, is increasingly threatened by cult-related violence, drug abuse, armed robbery and recurrent herdsmen attacks in several communities.

It urged the Commissioner of Police to decisively tackle cultism, drug trafficking, armed robbery, herdsmen-related violence and other forms of criminality, while strengthening intelligence-led and community-based policing across the state.

NYCN further called on CP Aina to deepen collaboration with youth leaders, traditional institutions, community stakeholders, civil society organisations and other security agencies, stressing that sustained engagement with young people and host communities is critical to crime prevention, early warning and the dismantling of criminal networks.

The council also advocated the establishment of a regular Police–Youth Dialogue Forum in the state, noting that structured engagement would help build mutual trust, improve intelligence gathering and promote peaceful coexistence, particularly in communities affected by cultism, drug abuse and herdsmen attacks.

Commending the Delta State Police Command for its swift handling of a reported human rights violation involving the council’s Principal Secretary, Comrade Tomi Woujola, by a Divisional Police Officer in Asaba, the youth body described the response as a demonstration of accountability and professionalism.

Reaffirming its commitment to public safety, the council pledged its readiness to partner with the police on youth sensitisation programmes, anti-drug campaigns, peace advocacy and information-sharing initiatives aimed at curbing criminality and strengthening community policing.

The NYCN also urged youths across Delta State to shun cultism, drug abuse and other criminal activities, and to cooperate with security agencies in safeguarding lives and property, in line with the MORE Agenda of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.
