LAGOS – Set to paint the town red, no fewer than eight sitting governors across partisanship, top politicians as well as captains of Industries will converge at the prestigious Eko Hotel & Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos, South West Nigeria, for the Independent Award 2023 organised by the frontline and digital newspaper group, the Independent Newspapers Limited, publishers of Daily, Saturday and Sunday Independent.
The event tagged ‘Celebrating Excellence’ which is to be held today will celebrate government functionaries, legislators, champions of industry and politicians who have impacted positively on the lives of Nigerians across all spectrums.
The organisers noted that the awardees, numbering 28 spread across relevant categories were selected for their honour and contributions to humanity.
The awardees, the organisers emphasis, were selected based strictly on their achievements while in office in 2023 without compromising its integrity as the most credible newspaper in Nigeria, with millions of followers to its credit.
Among those to mount the podium today to be deservedly honoured is Olorogun Hon. Barr. John Obukowho Nani, the Chairman of the Delta State Oil Producing Area Development Commission(DESOPADEC), for the Independent Public Sector Manager (State) of the Year Award.
The award according to the organizers is in recognition of his contributions to public Service in Delta State and the board of DESOPADEC over the years. As Executive Director, Finance & Admin, he was outstanding in managing the finances of the agency and his outstanding qualities as a manager ensured that the Commission impacted positively in the areas of empowerment, skill acquisition training, renovation of education facilities, land reclamation, health etc within the host communities
Particularly noteworthy, since he became the Chairman of the Board of the Commission, and with the very exceptional leadership and pragmatic support of Executive Governor of Delta State, His Excellecy, Rt Hon Sheriff Oborevwori, he has brought his experience as Public Administrator to bear on the activities of the Commission for the benefit of the oil bearing communities.
His nomination, which is in line with the philosophy of the award: Celebrating Trailblazers and Exceptional Nigerians-is a testament of his achievements as a public servant and It is essentially to encourage him and his colleagues in the current board of the Commission to continue to raise the bar to significantly drive more development in the oil bearing communities of Delta State
It is on record that under his watch as Chairman of the Commission, hundreds of graduates of the 4th set of the DESOPADEC Skills Acquisition Academy were recently empowered with starter packs to immediately launch them as entrepreneurs and
employers of labour in line with the MORE Agenda of the Gov. Sherrif Oborevwori’s administration.
Other deserving recipients of the prestigious Independent Awards today include distinguished individuals and organisations such as His Excellency, Hon. Mai Mala Buni (CON), the Executive Governor of Yobe State, for the Independent Man of the Year Award; His Excellency, Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State 2023 Governor of the Year in Infrastructure Development; His Excellency, Governor Biodun Oyebanji of Ekiti State,for the Governor of the Year (Community Development); His Excellency, Governor Agbu Kefas of Taraba State, for the Governor of the Year (Education & Youth Empowerment) and Pastor Umo Eno, the Executive Governor of Cross River State who would bag an award as Governor of the Year (Fiscal Discipline), where they have made giant strides in their state.
Others are Tajudeen Abass, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, who will bag the Legislator of the Year (National) Award; Chief Olabode Ibiyinka George and Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, both of who will bag the Life Time Achievement Award; Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (State Public Sector Agency of the Year)Tantita Security Services Nigeria Limited (Security Company of the Year), and Seplat Petroleum Development Company (Indigenous Oil Company of the Year), among others.
His Majesty, Ogiame Atunwase 11, the Olu of Warri, will play the role of the Royal Father of the Day, while the seasoned journalist, former Governor of Ogun State, Chief Segun Osoba, will chair the occasion.
About 500 guests are expected to grace the epoch-making occasion.
Independent Award was instituted over a decade ago to honour credible Nigerians at home and in the Diaspora, corporates, and institutions who stood out in their various fields of endeavour. The annual ceremony has been adjudged the most credible in Nigeria’s social space.
