Ewu-Urhobo King Calls for Immediate Security Intervention After Fatal Confrontation
Ughelli, Delta State
His Royal Majesty, HRM Clement Oghenerukevwe Ikolo, Urhukpe I, the King of Ewu-Urhobo Kingdom, has expressed deep sorrow and concern following a violent clash between the people of Ewu-Urhobo Kingdom in Ughelli South Local Government Area and the Edjekota community in Ughelli North Local Government Area. The violence erupted as a result of a longstanding land dispute between two families from Ewu-Urhobo and Edjekota, despite repeated reports to the Nigerian Police regarding encroachment on ancestral lands.
In an official statement, HRM Ikolo condemned the violence, calling for an immediate de-escalation of the situation to avoid further loss of life. The altercation escalated after police attempts to make lawful arrests, which were met with barricades, forcing the officers to retreat to Ewu-Urhobo Kingdom. Subsequent reinforcement by additional police forces led to a violent confrontation, resulting in tragic fatalities and serious injuries.
The King addressed the matter with a call for calm, urging the people of Ewu-Urhobo to remain law-abiding and refrain from retaliatory actions. HRM Ikolo has personally reached out to the Nigeria Police, the King of Ogor Kingdom, and local government officials, requesting their intervention. He also made an appeal to the Delta State Government, calling on Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and Deputy Governor Monday Onyeme to send additional security forces to both communities to prevent further violence.
In his appeal, HRM Ikolo emphasized the need for peaceful dialogue between the communities, calling for unity and cooperation to address the land dispute. He also urged the Delta State Government to consider constructing an alternative access road for Ewu-Urhobo Kingdom to reduce vulnerabilities from potential blockades and harassment through Edjekota.
In his closing remarks, HRM Ikolo offered prayers for the souls of the departed and speedy recovery for the injured. He reaffirmed his commitment to working closely with the authorities to restore peace and bring justice to the affected communities.
HRM Ikolo’s message to the people of Ewu-Urhobo and Edjekota was one of unity, respect, and commitment to resolving the situation through peaceful means, calling on all parties to prioritize peace over violence.
May peace be restored in the region, and may the Federal Republic of Nigeria continue to thrive in harmony and unity.
HRM Clement Oghenerukevwe Ikolo, Urhukpe I
