Democracy Day: A Time for Reflection, Renewal, and Responsibility Says Oyibode.

As Nigeria marks this year’s Democracy Day, the Executive Chairman of Udu Local Government Council, Olorogun Hon. Vincent Ogheneruemu Oyibode JP, FCIA, has called on citizens to reflect deeply on the values, responsibilities, and promises of democratic governance.
In a statement made available to newsmen in Udu, The Executive Chairman of Udu Local Government Council Oyibode described Democracy as more than a system of governance. According to him, it is a symbol of freedom, civic responsibility, equality, and an enduring reminder that power belongs to the people.
“Today, we commemorate Democracy Day – a day that reminds us of the long journey we have traveled, the struggles of our heroes past, and the need to protect the sacred principles of justice, equality, and participatory governance. Democracy affirms that every voice matters, every vote counts, and every citizen has a stake in shaping the destiny of our nation.”
While commending the resilience of Nigerians in defending democratic norms, the Udu Council Boss emphasized that democracy thrives when citizens are active, informed, and united in the pursuit of a better society.
“As leaders, we must listen more, serve selflessly, and make decisions that benefit the collective good. As citizens, we must speak up, vote wisely, and insist on accountability. Democracy is not a destination—it is a continuous journey that demands participation from every citizen, regardless of status or background.”
The Executive Chairman of Udu Local Government Council reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to inclusive governance, grassroots development, and peace-building in Udu, stressing that democratic dividends must be visible in the lives of the people.
He urged all Udu residents to remain law-abiding, promote peaceful coexistence, and never take for granted the power of their voices and votes.
“Let Democracy Day serve as a yearly reminder that freedom is not free, and governance must never be left in the hands of a few. We are all custodians of democracy, and the future depends on what we do with this responsibility today,” he concluded.
