Delta State Govt. Pledges Swift Action In Addressing Ughelli South Oil Spillage
Delta State Government has assured people of Usieffurun, Ekrokpe, Egbo-Urhie and Arhagba Communities in Ughelli South Local Government Area, recently affected by oil spill of quick clean up to halt the devastating effects on them and their communities.
The State Commissioner for Oil and Gas, Olorogun Vincent Oyibode gave assurance during an on-the-spot assessment of the oil spill.
Last Monday of November 2023, the people of Usieffurun, Ekrokpe, Egbo-Urhie, and Arhagba communities woke up to notice that their rivers, streams, and farms had been flooded with crude oil which spilled from a platform belonging to Heritage Company.
The oil spill destroyed aquatic life and farm produce in the affected communities with its attendant consequences on their general well-being.
In their cry for help, they sought the intervention of the Delta State Government.
In a quick response to the Save Our Soul message by the affected communities, the Delta State Commissioner for Oil and Gas, Olorogun Vincent Oyibode, visited the spot of the spill still covered by crude oil.
Speaking during the assessment visit, the Oil and Gas Commissioner sympathized with the affected communities.
Olorogun Oyibode told the people that the Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s administration is responsive and people friendly promising that the State Government would liaise with Heritage Oil Company for a quick clean-up of the affected areas.
He called on the people to remain calm as they would receive palliative from the State Emergency Management Agency, SEMA.
Responding, the President of Ekrokpe Community, Mr Sunday Ogoyibo who was represented thanked Governor Oborevwori and Olorogun Oyibode for the visit.
He pledged the readiness of the communities to remain peaceful while waiting for the needed response.
At the time of filing this report, the water bodies and farmlands were covered with crude oil.
