Delta State Government Cracks Down on Illegal Waste Disposal by Hoteliers
The Delta State Government has announced a rigorous crackdown on hoteliers who illegally channel septic waste into public drainage systems, a practice that poses serious environmental and public health risks. This strong stance was articulated by the Chairman of the State Taskforce on Environment, Hon. Godspower Asiuwhu, during a parley with members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) at their “Journalist Hangout” event in Asaba. Hon. Asiuwhu expressed the government’s deep concern over the increasing environmental hazards caused by improper waste disposal, emphasizing that such actions would no longer be tolerated.
During the meeting, Hon. Asiuwhu stressed that the indiscriminate disposal of septic waste not only endangers the environment but also threatens the health and safety of Delta State residents. He made it clear that the government’s decision to target these violators is part of a broader commitment to creating a cleaner, healthier, and safer environment for all citizens. The Chairman underscored the importance of protecting public infrastructure and maintaining the integrity of the state’s drainage systems, which are vital for the well-being of the community.
In addition to the crackdown, Hon. Asiuwhu revealed that the state government has established a special committee to investigate hotels that have been found diverting waste and pool water into public drains. He warned that hoteliers found guilty would face severe penalties and legal action. The Taskforce on Environment, in collaboration with other relevant authorities, will intensify inspections and monitoring efforts across the state to identify and prosecute offenders. Hon. Asiuwhu also reiterated the government’s determination to eradicate indiscriminate refuse dumping, which has led to the arrest of 30 offenders for illegal waste disposal.
To further enhance environmental sustainability, the state has constituted a night taskforce that patrols while residents sleep, ensuring that waste is properly managed and the environment remains clean. Hon. Asiuwhu highlighted Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s zero-tolerance policy towards environmental violations, stating that the government’s efforts are aimed at beautifying Delta State and making it a cleaner and healthier place for all. He also called on citizens to register with state-approved Private Sector Participants (PSPs) for waste disposal services, ensuring compliance with proper waste management practices.
In response, the Chairman, Comrade Churchill Oyowe and members of the NUJ commended Hon. Asiuwhu for his outstanding achievements in promoting environmental sustainability in Delta State. They pledged their continued support to the government’s efforts in safeguarding the environment and improving the quality of life for all residents.
