The Ughelli community came alive earlier today Friday, 26/12/25, as Chief (Dr.) Isaac Omavuaye Akpoveta, Director General of the Delta State Contributory Health Insurance Commission, distributed food items worth millions of naira to women across Ofuoma, Odovie and Emeragha communities in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State.

The exercise, which featured the sharing of rice, groundnut oil and other essential household commodities, targeted women, widows and young mothers from the three neighboring communities, bringing festive relief to over 1,600 beneficiaries.

Speaking shortly after the distribution, Chief Dr. Akpoveta described Boxing Day as a symbolic occasion for sharing love and supporting one another. He emphasized that the initiative was inspired by the MORE Agenda of Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori.

“Today is Boxing Day a day traditionally set aside to share love, open gifts and extend kindness to one another. I invited you here not to box in a ring, but to open boxes and bags of food so that we can enjoy the blessings of Christmas with joy and dignity,” he said.

Akpoveta noted that although his initial target was 1,000 beneficiaries, provisions were made for 1,800 women due to the overwhelming response from the communities.

“Empowerment is not measured by the size of what is given, but by the love behind it. What matters today is that everyone goes home with something and with joy,” he stated.

Linking his gesture to his role in the health sector, Akpoveta reiterated the need to continually uplift vulnerable populations through both healthcare and humanitarian interventions.

He disclosed that under the commission’s equity plan, a significant portion of the 2.75 million expected enrollees are vulnerable groups including pregnant women, widows and children adding that his office remains committed to ensuring dignity and support for them.

Addressing political office holders in the state, he appealed for a continued culture of compassion.

“Do what you can with what you have. Even empowering 10 people removes hunger from 10 homes,” he urged.

The DG expressed appreciation to the benefiting communities, assuring them of sustained support while reaffirming loyalty to the administration of Governor Oborevwori.

“We stand firmly behind our working governor. We will support Governor Oborevwori for a second term — until 2031 and beyond,” he affirmed.

Closing his remarks, Akpoveta prayed for increased strength and resources to deepen empowerment initiatives in the coming year.

“I have been giving for many years, and by God’s grace, I will continue,” he added.

Meanwhile, beneficiaries from the three communities lauded Akpoveta for his benevolence and pledged their continued support for Governor Oborevwori’s administration.

They described the gesture as timely, especially amid rising economic challenges, vowing to mobilize massive support for the governor in the 2027 elections.

The event ended with jubilation, prayers and songs of appreciation as residents dispersed with their Christmas packages.
