REMEMBERING A HERO: THE LIFE AND LEGACY OF FRIDAY ANI.

By Austin Emaduku

The Uvwie Local Government Secretariat stands as a towering testament to the vision and leadership of a man who lived and fought for his people. Driving past this landmark today, I noticed the statue of Late Hon. (Chief) Friday Meyawhe Ani, the first democratically elected Executive Chairman of Uvwie Local Government, and I was filled with nostalgia and admiration for a man whose impact on Uvwie remains indelible.

Friday Ani, as he was fondly called, rose to prominence as the Vice Chairman of the old Okpe Local Government, which then included Udu and Uvwie kingdoms. He later became the pioneer Chairman of Uvwie Local Government following its creation. His contemporary and close ally, Late Hon. (Chief) Austin K. Ogbaburhon, served as the first Executive Chairman of Udu Local Government. Together, they were formidable political figures whose combined efforts could have significantly altered the course of Urhobo politics, had fate been kinder.

A Visionary Builder
One of Ani’s most remarkable achievements was the completion of the Uvwie Local Government Secretariat, an architectural legacy that remains the administrative hub of the council. However, this accomplishment was not without challenges. Ani faced fierce opposition from the Delta State judiciary over the acquisition of the land on which the secretariat now stands. Undeterred, he fought tirelessly, arguing that Uvwie people deserved a befitting administrative center. His resolve extended to securing the land for the majestic Uvwie Kingdom Palace, which today stands as a symbol of Uvwie pride. For these bold moves, Ani faced political setbacks, including a brief loss of his mandate. Yet, his resilience saw him reclaim his position and continue his visionary work.

Honoring a Legacy
The decision by Hon. (Chief) Dr. Ramson Tega Ramson Onoyake, the immediate past Chairman of Uvwie Local Government Council, to erect Ani’s statue and name the road leading to the secretariat after him is commendable. However, it feels like more could be done to immortalize Ani’s contributions. Naming the secretariat itself after him would serve as a more fitting tribute to his sacrifices and achievements.

A Humanitarian Leader
Ani was not just a visionary; he was also a philanthropist of rare generosity. His home was a daily hub for those in need, where he dispensed financial assistance from a “Ghana Must Go” bag filled with cash. His acts of kindness touched many lives, including mine. I still recall the day he restored my hope after a devastating burglary by providing enough money to replace everything I lost. Such was the man Ani—a leader who combined vision with a deep sense of humanity.

A Misunderstood Icon
Despite his many virtues, Ani’s public image was often overshadowed by misconceptions and exaggerated criticisms. Yet, those who worked closely with him knew him as a man of immense intellect and humility. A personal experience during my time at Okpe Local Government exemplifies this. Following a minor misunderstanding that escalated into staff protests against him, Ani, rather than react negatively, convened a meeting and rendered an unreserved apology. This gesture of humility won over the staff and marked a turning point in his relationship with them.

A Life Cut Short
Ani’s quest for self-improvement was unrelenting, and he had the potential for even greater accomplishments. Tragically, his life was cut short in the ill-fated Bellview flight of October 22, 2005. The news of his death struck like a thunderbolt. I vividly remember weeping openly upon hearing of his demise. His loss was a monumental blow not just to Uvwie but to all who knew him.

20 Years of Reflection
As we approach the 20th anniversary of Ani’s passing this October, it is my hope that Uvwie people and leaders will come together to celebrate his life and contributions more profoundly. His was a brief but impactful journey, marked by courage, vision, and a relentless commitment to the progress of his people.

May his soul continue to rest in perfect peace. Amen.
