Federal Medical Centre, Ovwian Begins Advanced Surgeries, Steps Forward As An Emerging Centre Of Excellence.

The Chief Medical Director of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Ovwian, Prof. Dr. Kingsley Akaba, has stated that the hospital has commenced advanced surgical procedures, marking a major milestone in the institution’s journey toward becoming a leading centre of excellence in healthcare delivery.

Speaking during a strategic engagement with stakeholders, Prof. Akaba noted that although FMC Ovwian was established and became functional recently, the institution has made impressive progress in expanding its clinical services and strengthening its capacity for specialized care.

He explained that the introduction of advanced surgeries reflects the hospital’s strong commitment to delivering quality, life-saving and specialized medical services to the people of Delta State and the wider Niger Delta region.

Even as a young institution, FMC Ovwian has taken deliberate steps to improve the standard of healthcare available to our people,” Prof. Akaba said. “We have now begun performing advanced surgical procedures as part of our efforts to reduce referrals outside the state and even beyond the country.”

According to him, the Centre is continuously building its manpower base, upgrading its facilities and developing strong partnerships to support complex medical interventions and specialist services.
The CMD further revealed that FMC Ovwian has attracted international collaborations and grants, including partnerships with reputable institutions such as Peking International Medical University in China, which are helping to strengthen training, research and clinical practice.

“Our goal is simple and clear,” Prof. Akaba said. “We are building a hospital that meets international standards and serves as a hub for advanced surgery, training and medical research. This is how we intend to improve healthcare outcomes, reduce brain drain and restore confidence in our health system.”

He reassured the public of the hospital’s continued commitment to professionalism, patient safety and continuous improvement as it expands its range of specialized services.
