Leading with Purpose: Ukodhiko’s Investment In Education Wins Commendation

At a time when many political office holders are criticized for embarking on white-elephant projects and jamboree-style empowerment programmes with little impact on the lives of ordinary people, the Member representing Isoko Federal Constituency, Rep. Jonathan Ajirioghene Ukodhiko, has continued to draw commendation for his people-focused and purposeful approach to leadership, particularly in the education sector.

In a deliberate effort to tackle the persistent challenges confronting education in Isoko Nation, Rep. Ukodhiko has rolled out a series of strategic interventions aimed at easing financial burdens on parents and providing equal opportunities for students, especially those from indigent backgrounds.

One of the most far-reaching of these initiatives is his decision to fully sponsor the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) registration for all eligible Isoko candidates. This intervention has significantly reduced the financial pressure on low-income families while ensuring that no qualified candidate is denied the opportunity to sit for the examination due to lack of funds.

Beyond this, Rep. Ukodhiko introduced an automatic, comprehensive scholarship scheme for the twenty (20) highest-scoring UTME candidates from Isoko Nation. The scholarship covers professional courses such as Medicine, Law, Aeronautic Engineering, and other critical fields. Unlike conventional scholarship schemes that are often limited to tuition for a single academic session, this programme is all-encompassing. Beneficiaries enjoy full sponsorship covering school fees, hostel accommodation, institutional dues, and personal allowances from admission through graduation.

Observers have described the initiative as both novel and unprecedented, setting a new benchmark for educational support in the constituency.

In furtherance of his commitment to widening access to higher education, Rep. Ukodhiko facilitated the engagement of the Nigeria Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) by inviting its management team to his country home. During the engagement, he made a strong case for Isoko students studying in public tertiary institutions nationwide. The NELFUND team, in turn, assured that all eligible Isoko students who apply would have access to the education loan scheme.

To ensure that this opportunity translates into real benefits for students, the lawmaker established a NELFUND Free Application Centre at his constituency office in Oleh. The centre allows students to apply for the loan at no cost, eliminating barriers such as lack of information, technical know-how, or financial constraints.

Stakeholders note that this move goes beyond mere symbolism, reflecting a deep level of intentionality and commitment to sustainable human capital development. Many beneficiaries have attested that the initiative has relieved parents of school fee pressures and enabled students to concentrate fully on their academic pursuits.

Perhaps most striking is the fact that these interventions are not funded through constituency project allocations. Rather, they are entirely philanthropic gestures executed through the UJA Foundation, Rep. Ukodhiko’s personal platform for social intervention.

For many in Isoko Nation, these actions exemplify what they describe as purposeful leadership—a leadership style anchored on empathy, realism, and long-term solutions to societal challenges.
